Infl3ctor / Digital Calligraffiti
2016-PresentInfl3ctor is a tool for live projecting calligraphy into the urban space. The act of drawing on paper is projected at the size of buildings, becoming Digital Calligraffiti. The Infl3ctor table is designed to be as simple and “transparent” as possible - what is drawn in black is projected in white, with the motion of the strokes coming from the human hand Everything that is projected is an amplification of human expression and gesture.
Multiple Infl3ctors can be connected together over the Internet, enabling real-time collaboration and message exchange between people in different cities The drawing from each city is shown overlaid in a different color - the connected cities become a shared canvas for human expression and connection.
The Infl3ctor is a collaboration with Palestinian Calligraffiti artist Hamza Abu Ayyash and was created for the Digital Calligraffiti project initiated by Public Art Lab and Don Stone. The Infl3ctor is inspired by the pioneering work of the Graffiti Research Lab (gr33ts!) and the form factor takes inspiration from Golan Levin and Zach Lieberman’s Manual Input Sessions.
The Digital Calligraffiti project has taken on a world-wide scale, with the worldwide collective performing in numerous cities over the years including Berlin, Beirut, Abu Dhabi, Ghent, Barcelona, Beijing, Toronto, Marseille, Dubai, Karachi, and many more.
